* Courier is a drama about two kids who are bribed in to being a local drug dealer's secret couriers in exchange for £5 cash. When the kids find out they have actually been helping to deal drugs the kids are unable to get out of the situation on threats of violence.
* The film uses mostly objective camera work, filming the situation as it is, but the film is accompanied by the child protagonists narration which could argue some subjectivity to the film.
* Mise en scene is an important part of this film. The setting is a small suburb town and this setting helps to immediately denote an Urban culture where crime like this is subconsciously awake in small suburbs.
* The use of unrestricted narrative helps to propel the story along and fit into the five minute slot. But also also helps to enforce a beginning, middle and an end. The beginning is where the child protagonist's friend tells him bout his new job as a courier. The middle is the child characters delivering successfully to several houses. The end is the confrontation of the dealer and the rhetorical question posed from the film at the end: "What would you do?"
* The film doesn't use a non-diegetic soundtrack and this use of natural ambient sound helps to reinforce the social realism of the piece and makes sure the audience are aware of how the possibility of this plot could actually happen.
* The camerawork in this piece is interesting as it often reinforces the age gap and differing levels of power between the children and the male antagonist. The male antagonist is often filmed from a low angle to impose his power and dominance over the children. Whereas the children are often looked down upon to show their inferiority. * In terms of editing
* The film could be argued to contain elements of social realism (click link for a wikipedia definition) and deals with realistic issues of drug dealing. The social groups in this film are represented in such ways; the child protagonists are represented as innocent and unprepared for the dangerous world around them.

more images etc, again editing?
ReplyDeleteoverall, you show that you can identify key elements, without entering into unnecessary waffle.
ReplyDeleteyou could still do with more detail.
Consider narrative structure and in particular, you ten d to avoid discussing editing (and editing is the key to success in your film!). Parallel, cross, manipulation of time and space, transitions (you do in the first film!), continuity etc.
