Filming Techniques

There are a few filming techniques that we think we are going to incorporate into our film that would expand on the levels of filming we did in our prelim. and thriller opening.

One technique we want to use is a reverse zoom. This would be used in the soldier scenes where the audience are made to believe they are in the midst of a battle scene and the reverse zoom would be used as an extreme close up of the male protagonists face to contort reality, whether he is there or not.

ABOVE is an amateur example of a reverse zoom.

It was famously first used in Alfred Hitchcock's 1950's thriller 'Vertigo' displaying the male protagonists fear of heights when he looked down. As seen in the video below from 2:05 mins onwards

This we hope would be a good technique for our piece and to make the audience understand the mental disorder that is overcoming our ex-soldier character.

ANOTHER TECHNIQUE WE WANT TO USE IS DEPTH OF FIELD

We want to use this technique also in the soldier scenes. When he goes down to the kitchen to get a drink of water there is an over the shoulder shot where we will go from the focus being on the male protagonist to a photo frame in the background of him dressed as a soldier having just enrolled.

There are various tutorials on youtube of depth of field but this one ion the first few minutes gives a good demonstration of the technique.

These are techniques we didn't use in any previous work and techniques like this would show our development as film makers from our earlier projects.

  1. If you can, return to these posts later and add your examples from your own film to demonstrate how you applied them. That would be very good practice.
