Chloë's Short Film Analysis #4: The Black Hole.
- The Black Hole was created in 2008 by two men know only as Phil and Olly, as part of Future Shorts. the film shows the story of a sleep-deprived office worker accidentally discovers a black hole - and then greed gets the better of him.
- This film is a comedy. Its uses aspects of comedy well, combining the humour of the office man with the darker side of his greed.
- The film is simply a slice of life, showing the office worker for just a few minutes of his life. Ironically, the end of the film is most likely the end of the protagonists life, which ties in with the comedy genre. Interestingly, all narrative is done through movement and action as there is no written or spoken narrative.
- The use of sound is clever. There is no dialogue in the whole film; this is to accentuate the office workers loneliness in the world. It also allows for the digetics of the office to come through, such as the copy machine running, which highlights the hum-drum normality of the office workers situation. There is also the use of a special sound effect to give the black hole a sense of atmosphere. A small sound bridge is used to link the end of the film with the credits.
- The camera work is very well done. Many CU and BCU are used to show the mans emotions, which are key to the plot. Some are used at the beginning to show the mans boredom and tiredness, whist others are used later on to show the mans greed and want for the money. One such shot, pictures right, shows the man staring longingly at the door in CU eating a chocolate bar greedily, thus symbolising his greed for the money in the safe. All mise en scene revolves around the topic of mundane. The low key lighting and desaturated grey colouring add mood and boredom to the film, whist the average naturalistic setting, costume and props give the protagonist a reason for being so hum-drum. The only item in the film that hold any sort of colour it the tape around the bundles of money, which accentuates their importance to the protagonist. Editing has been used to show the hand and body going into the black hole. I want to attempt such radical editing in my short film.
- The film represents the greed in today's society, and also how the aspirations of ordinary folk have disintegrated into greed too.
good.
