'This Is England' Poster Research

'This Is England' - Shane Meadows, 2006

Genre-
* From the poster we can gather that T.I.E is...

* A socialist realist film. The setting contains a block of flats and a metallic front. This could represent a Working class setting, used commonly in social realist films.

* It doesn't really look dark but does look threatening. This costume and make up makes the line up of characters look dangerous, you wouldn't mess with them. This could suggest the film was within Crime genre.
* This could also be displayed by the line up of characters much similar to a police/suspect line-up (example pictured right)  also connoting a crime film.

Representation-
* The representation of the characters in the T.I.E poster is they are working class, renound in the 80's when the film is set for working in factories or in manual labour. This is evident by the scenery round them, what looks like a run-down council estate in a big city. Areas of mise en scene also help connote this working class image with the use of costume; jeans and jackets and hair cuts; very short

* In terms of gender, there are more men than women. This could reinforce the dominance men have in this society or setting that T.I.E is set. Reinforcing a working class background; men are breadwinners and women are left at home

* Body language ties in as well. men have powerful stature. Some with arms crossed and some with hands in pockets. All suggest that they have a presence and could be intimidating.

* Elements of camerawork can also apply to this poster. The poster has been taken at an eye level shot. An eye level shot allows us to be level withthe characters and see the world from their perspective. This could suggest we are going to see their England, Summer, 1983 from their perspective.

* A low angle would make these characters seem more threateninga nd more daunting but a high angle shot may suggest we were looking down upon them as a class.

Narrative-
* In terms of narrative the poster seems to, as said before, display a working class background and this brings it's own connotations of what could happen in terms of narrative:

* The positioning of the characters in a line makes the poster look like a police line-up. A police line-up connoting crime. The narrative could therefore contain elements of crime. Could be; murder, theft, burglary or violence.

* The fact the film is set in Summer 1983 would also have relevance and the narrative may have particular significance to the real events of summer 1983 in England.

Target Audience-
* In terms of target audience T.I.E would be aimed at:

* Those who were actually from that background, Summer 1983 in England, those who could relate to it with their own experiences.

* From near equality in numbers of both men and women on the poster it would suggest the film is not aimed at one gender alone and that both men and women could relate to the range of characters.

* This film would also appeal to readers of film magazines Empire and Total Film who have positivley reviewed the films. The film has also won several awards displayed at the top so film fans of all genres would be likely to watch T.I.E as it meets the high standard to British Film Making.

  1. They are Skin heads - you might wnat to google that and then hyperlink - it will alter some of your conclusions above. Skinheads were a particualr youth culture of the 70 and 80s (still a few around today). Being patriotic is a key theme and known for being racist.
