Location Research

 22/11/11
The plot of our film revolves around our male protagonist sitting on a bench as other characters in our piece walk by and as an audience we see into their back stories. This location runs all the way through our piece so picking the right location is vital for our film.

We need:
* Somewhere busy so we have a lot of people as extras walking past
* A simplistic location so that the audience are able to focus on the characters when sat on the bench.
* Somewhere with easy access if we were to film there

Considering these points a good choice seems to be Brighton sea front (or busy area) where ,with easy access, we would be able to film many passers-by on a busy day in Brighton.

Brighton (Wikipedia page on Brighton summarising the city in the link) also being a busy city is full of people from diverse and differing backgrounds. The characters in our film all have their own different backgrounds and life stories that all believably could be living in a bustling city like Brighton.

Using a bench by Brighton sea front would put us in a good position to capture many people walking past. I considered using one of these sea front bench huts that regularly have streams of passers by and would be within public domain. Displayed right >

HOWEVER we do have to consider where we film because in terms of access near places such as Churchill Square (displayed below) there are issues of public domain. Where certain areas are public and some are not.

I decided we should use a bustling city such as Brighton as opposed to a small village common like Lindfield Common (displayed below) because despite the local advantages of Lindfield the park would be sparse and unpopulated.

It would not be busy enough to be believable that our passer by characters could live there.

Whereas Brighton would provide a busier, diverse crowd of passers by making our characters we present more believable to live in a larger city opposed to small country village.

LOCATION RESEARCH UPDATE - 28/11/11

In terms of permission in Brighton there are certain areas we cannot film. However I have decided upon an area of public domain where we can film legally and still have the opportunities for bustling crowds to pass by as we film.

ABOVE: A print screen from Google street view of east street in Brighton

East street is a plausable place to film our bench scenes as the place will be busy enough to film crowds and also in public domain.

Another view of east street where we could film our bench scenes that would run throughout our film.

  1. consider sound as well. You will pick up traffic etc in a bustling urban area.
Get pictures of all your possible key locations where main character is seated. A bench in different locations. you could record the sound levels in each and add those to the blog. Again, you still have made explicit who this main character is and his connection to the other characters. you did say he would be mute in our discussions - in which case you need to do some research into this character type for the actor who plays them. The extract from "The silence that we looked at last year might be informative.
